Review Guides posted

Check the TypePad blog for the review guides.  A Review Power Point has also been posted, so you should have plenty to help you with studying for the Exam!

Monday we'll hear from the Africa and Japan groups.  Those of you who have checked the grades, you'll find that your ABET group grade is posted.  Remember, that's your grade WITHOUT the essay (due tomorrow).  Once you turn in your essay, I will grade that and add to your ABET grade (worth 15 points!).  See you tomorrow!

Change of Plans

Slight change to the Unit 10 Q-cards.  These were on the "due list" for tomorrow (Friday) before the group presentations continue.  So here's the change of plans...

Your Unit 10 Q-cards will not be graded separately, but rather should be turned in with your Q-card Binder.  Remember, you can turn this in any time up until Tuesday, but the sooner you turn it in, the sooner you get it back.  This is an invaluable tool for studying for the final. Don't forget to visit the TypePad blog for details about the Q-card binder!

See you all in class tomorrow.  The remaining four groups need to ready to present ( you never know who will be selected!) beginning at 8:20 SHARP.  Have a good night!

Final Unit of the semester

The Power Points and Homework sheet for the final unit of the semester have been posted to the typepad blog!

Remember, you will be turning in ALL of your Q-cards to date in one 3-ring binder as part of your final grade, so you should be getting those ready ASAP.  If you worked with a partner on some/all of the chapters, you will need to EACH have your OWN copy to turn in!

See you all tomorrow in class!  Only 3 weeks to go!

Test this week

Good evening, guys!

I have an offer for those of you who have a lot of tests on Friday.  If this is you and you don't want to have our test on Friday as well, you are welcome to take the test Thursday after school.  If you choose this option, you need to make sure your Q-cards and readings/videos are finished by Thursday in class.  You do NOT want to be seeing material for the first time during class and then be testing on it that afternoon.

I have one confirmed student for Thursday afternoon so far.  If you'd like to take me up on this offer, please let me know by Wednesday during class so that we an arrange a time for Thursday.

Have a good night and happy studying!

Field Trip possibility

I'm thinking we may have to continue our movie-going experiences as a class with this one next semester!  Thanks, Jordan, for the head's up!

Check out the trailer below and at around 15-16 seconds, see if you recognize the work they show.  Note the size compared to the actors!

ABET Groupings

The ABET Group selections have been posted on the TypePad blog.  Be sure to check who is in your group, and exchange contact information including e-mail and/or phone.  Also, each group will need to decide on a chairman, who will act as the main liaison for communication with me.  This will need to be decided by Wednesday of this week.  Have a think, and let me know soon.

Details will be coming this week regarding the project, but in the meantime you can be looking through your chapter!

Only two more weeks to go before Thanksgiving break...keep up the good work!

Giotto Arena Chapel Videos - due Tuesday!

Here are the links to the Arena Chapel videos on Smart History.  You can watch all four of them if you'd like (I recommend most of the videos on this site) but pay close attention to 1-3, as we will be discussing in class tomorrow.

Gothic reading

For the reading for the Gothic Period, should we be finished with the chapter or are all of the due dates back a day since we did not start Gothic until today?

British Museum Exhibition - Topic 4

Exhibitions like these always raise much controversy over whether objects of such worth and delicate nature should be subject to the high risks of traveling.  Was it responsible of the British Museum to organize this exhibition in London, knowing that these intensely delicate objects would have to travel from all over the world?  Or would it have been more socially and culturally responsible for them to fund an exhibition within the Naples area, wherein the objects wouldn't have to travel?  Argue your point with specific details!

British Museum Exhibition - Topic 3

There is much controversy over whether or not we should continue excavating at Pompeii, Herculaneum or both.  What is your opinion on the issue, and how would you go about convincing world leaders (and museum officials/archaeologists) that your opinion is the right one?

British Museum Exhibition - Topic 2

Much of the British Museum's exhibition focused on the LIFE of the citizens of both Pompeii and Herculaneum.  What one object from the exhibition do you feel best exemplifies the subject of EVERYDAY LIFE in either Pompeii or Herculaneum in AD 79?  Why do you connect with that object, and what is it about that object that makes it the most telling?

British Museum Exhibition - Topic 1

You are the curator at your local museum, and are putting together a small exhibition on natural disasters and their effects on the human race.  The museums of Pompeii and Herculaneum have agreed to loan you one item to represent the impact of volcanic activity.  What one object from the British Museum exhibition do you feel best sums up the death and destruction of Mount Vesuvius?

Pompeii & Herculaneum "Museum Visit"

It was great to see so many of you at the theater last night!  I hope you enjoyed the exhibition, and that it cemented some of the key elements of Roman life and art from that time.  For those of you who attended, please see the details of your assignment below:

ALL WORK MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND!  NO WORK SUBMITTED AFTER THIS TIME WILL BE ACCEPTED.

1.  You will see a series of questions/topics posted on the blog (following this post).  You must first construct a response for each of the topics.  These responses must fully address the topic/question posed.  Your responses can be conversational/candid in nature, but should be written in complete sentences.  Please be sure to post your response as a "comment" to the appropriate question/topic.  Responses should NOT be listed as new postings!

2.  After your classmates have posted their responses to the topics, you are responsible for replying to at least 3 students PER topic.  Please understand that three replies per topic is a bare minimum and you are welcome (and encouraged) to reply to more students (and multiple times, too!).  Please make sure that you are posting your reply to the student's comment, not the original question, so that we keep a neat and tidy string of comments!

The idea is that this should start an academic "conversation" of sorts, outside of our classroom time.

So what's at stake here?  You are earning points to be added to your overall quiz grade for Unit 6 (Greece).  This will be your three quizzes averaged together, plus any bonus points you earn here!  You can earn up to 10 bonus points, depending on the depth of your responses and your reactions/replies to your fellow classmates.  Feel free to be opinionated on these responses--you are not being judged on how you feel, but rather, how you support your arguments!

Ready?  Set?  Go!!!

Pantheon q card

The Pantheon, and many other q cards, have emperors as their patrons.  Many of these patrons are also listed as the artists from the websites i have visited.  Should I also be listing the patrons as the artists?

Sketchbook offer

Good Sunday morning!  As promised, I am here with the details of the Sketchbook grade opportunity.  For those of you who weren't pleased with your first Sketchbook grade, you have a one-time opportunity for a "re-do" of sorts.

If you are interested in this opportunity, here are the specifics:
1.  You must sign up with me by the end of the school day on Monday to let me know that you plan to re-submit your work.

2.  You must meet with me (5 minutes or so) to go over the original comments on your pink score sheet and your plan for your new page.  That means you must have given it some thought before we meet!

3.  Re-worked sketchbook pages are due on Friday, September 27 by the end of the day.  No exceptions!

4.  You must turn in the original project and pink grade sheet with your new project.

This is only worthwhile if you're willing to put in 100% effort, as the new and old grades will be averaged together for your final score.  Simply put, if I'm going to take time to grade these again, they better be fantastic!  Expectations will be high!

Due Dates

Hi guys,

Here are a few due dates for you to keep in mind:

Greek Temple Worksheets (given out in class today, 9/5):  must be colored and completely annotated by Wednesday, September 11th.  The worksheets (in case you need one) are on the other blog at http://waltonhigh.typepad.com/west/2013/09/greek-temple-packet.html

Q-Cards for ALL of Greek Chapter (turning in all at once): before the test on Monday, September 16th.

So far you should have a total of six (1 Geometric + 5 Archaic) Q-cards.  You will be getting the next section in class tomorrow (Friday).  There are only 4 for the Early Classical section, and we're covering them all on Friday.  From there we have High Classical, Late Classical, and Hellenistic to go!

Also, start expecting frequent short quizzes.  This is a big chapter, and we need to make sure that we're all staying on top of things!

New York Kouros

Here's another short video for those who need/want a little more info on the New York Kouros.  Informative, and only 6 minutes long.  Enjoy!  Remember, any time you need additional resources, check out SmartHistory's website below (part of the Khan Academy).  Loads of free videos and written resources for you to use on your Q-cards!  Websites are listed in your syllabus, as well.

http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/new-york-kouros.html

Exekias & black-figure painting

Hi guys.  We made it through a lot of material today in class, covering both sculpture and vase painting in one period!  To cement the ideas of Exekias and his black-figure painting, I've attached a quick 6-minute video for you to watch.  I hope it will bring together some of the ideas we discussed today, both in art and society/history.  I hope you're making your way through the Greek chapter as planned.  Next stop...Archaic architecture!

Stokstad Books

Good Saturday morning, everyone!

Good news regarding the Stokstad books.  For those of you who do not have the 3rd edition, we will be collecting your texts and swapping them out for 3rd editions on Wednesday.  Two important things here...first, I need to know who NEEDS a 3rd edition so that I can go to the bookroom and make sure we've got plenty to cover everyone.  Secondly, you need to bring you current editions to class on Wednesday so that we can make the swap-a-roo that morning.

For the weekend, go ahead and start your Greek chapter regardless of what edition you have.  You should start to read about the Geometric and Archaic periods first, as that will be the subject of our first assessment.  Please understand that this chapter is HUGE and is vitally important for your understanding of pretty much EVERYTHING that comes after it!  So take your time, read carefully, and take notes on what seems to be the main ideas.  Remember, read a section (a paragraph, a heading, it's up to you...) and only write down the important ideas, rather than every single detail.  We will fill in the details in class, so you need not write them down when you read!

Good luck, and once everyone is using the same edition, we will define the timeline of the readings a bit better.

Don't forget, your Sketchbook assignments will be due on Tuesday.  I'm looking forward to seeing them!  I have updated grades in the system as of Friday afternoon, so have a look and see how you're doing.  I will update again early next week with your new Q-card grades (HW and Quiz) and your Quiz from Friday.  Have a great holiday weekend!

Chapter 4 Q-Cards

I have attached some important information regarding the Q-cards to our secondary blog, found at the link below.... Please make sure you visit the site, download the template, and follow the directions for assembling your Q-Cards! http://waltonhigh.typepad.com/west/

Chapter 4 Materials

Hi guys. As you know, Blogger doesn't work well within Walton's network, so I can't make postings with attachments until I leave the building. As such, I have figured out a way around this. We will continue to have all of our discussions here, mainly because YOU can make comments, pose questions, etc. However, please add the below link to your "favorites" bar so that we can use it for posting any documents you may want to download. Hope this helps! http://waltonhigh.typepad.com/west/

Sketchbook Assignment Resources?

Is anyone else having trouble finding details on the Duane Hanson piece? I have the basic details down, but to finish my draft, I need some information that goes a little more in depth. If you've found a good online resource that you'd like to share, that would be much appreciated.

Chapter 4 Reading and Note-taking update

Hi guys. Now that the Unit 1 test is over, we can turn our attention to Chapter 4 and Aegean Art. To further our discussion we had in class on Wednesday regarding effective reading strategies and note-taking strategies, I have divided the reading up into three sections for you. Hopefully this will make the material easier to digest, and will lead to more effective notes. If you are struggling with notes (i.e. you are writing down nearly EVERYTHING you read), I want you to use the Cornell notes page. If you can take a chunk of reading, and condense it into one page of notes covering one idea or main topic, you are doing effective reading. Also, DRAW PICTURES AND DIAGRAMS of as much as possible! Even if you are not an artist, it will help you to commit those pieces to a deeper understanding. Again, this class is a college-level course, as is most every AP course, and as such the reading will be vitally important to your success. If you are struggling to keep your head above water with this class (and balancing it with your others!), come in NOW to see me! Let's sit down together and see if we can get you on the right track! We may be able to come up with some tips and strategies to make this learning process more efficient for you. Reading Schedule for Chapter 4: 2nd edition due Friday 89 - 93 (Cycladic Art) due Monday 93 - 102 (Minoan Art) due Tuesday 102 - 111 (Mycenean Art) 3rd edition due Friday 82 - 86 (Cycladic Art) due Monday 86 - 95 (Minoan Art) due Tuesday 95 - 104 (Mycenean Art) 4th edition due Friday 80 - 84 (Cycladic Art) due Monday 84 - 92 (Minoan Art) due Tuesday 92 - 99 (Mycenean Art)

Annotated Mona Lisa

Hi guys!  So we're scratching the Barnet book from the reading materials list for the semester.  I found a much better (and greatly affordable) alternative!  Please check out the link below and have a look at the book.  You guys have a decision to make.  We can do one of two things with the book...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0740768727/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Option 1...you each purchase your own book and in return can write in it.  It's a great review guide for each chapter, and then of course for the December final and AP exam.

Option 2...Walton can purchase a class set (like our Gardner books) for use only while we're in class.  Remember, if you make a SINGLE mark in the class set book, you are liable for it.

The book is under $20, but I am happy to go with whatever you'd prefer.  Have a look and think about it.  Then vote on the poll to the right with your choice.  I'll leave the poll up until Monday morning.

Just finished with the Q-cards (finally!) and will be handing those back tomorrow.  Still have some work to do on the quizzes, so you'll have to wait in suspense over the weekend until I can get those back on Monday.  Sorry!  I have one Q-card turned in with no name, so please check with me tomorrow to confirm if this is yours!

See you tomorrow...

Matrix?

Hi everyone.  If you're having trouble with some of the boxes within the matrix, I posted a glossary to help you out.  Hope that clarifies it a bit.  Look to the right sidebar for the link to the glossary.  See you tomorrow!

Stokstad book - edition?

Ok, so by now everyone in the class should have received his/her Art History textbook (Marilyn Stokstad's Art History. As there are several editions of this book in our school, please post a comment on this blog so I know which edition you have. You'll also find a new poll over on the right. Please make a "vote" there with your edition number. Please vote only once.

Barnet book?

I've heard that some students are having trouble finding the Barnet book at reasonable prices. Those of you who have looked either online or at a local bookstore, please comment on this post to let me know what you've found. Please don't stress about having this by Monday. We'll work together as a class to find the best pricing and best edition. You must be a member of the blog in order to make a comment, so please send me an e-mail to join if you haven't done so already.

Don't forget that tomorrow (Saturday) is the last day to vote in the poll to the right...make your vote count! Remember, you can vote for more than one topic!

Juniors, your books are coming tomorrow (Friday)...you WILL have a reading assignment over the weekend, so seniors if you want to get ahead, start looking at Chapter 1 regarding Prehistoric Art.

See you all tomorrow!
